Selling on Etsy too

Alongside Etsy, or instead of it

It’s your choice, and we’re not here to replace Etsy. Etsy is brilliant at putting you in front of people browsing a huge marketplace. Your own shop is for the people who already know you, in your own look, with your own customer list. Use both, or just your own.

Different jobs

What each one is good at

Not a contest. If you use both, Etsy is where new buyers find you and your own shop is where they come back to.

Using both

Your own shop next to your Etsy shop

  1. Step 1

    Open your shop

Pick a name, an address and a template. It’s free, it takes a couple of minutes, and your Etsy shop carries on exactly as it is.

  2. Step 2

    Bring your products across

Download your active listings from Etsy, then drop the file into Bring from Etsy. Each listing comes in as a draft for you to check. Where to find Etsy’s download

  3. Step 3

    Give them more

Add what a shop of your own can do: options with their own prices, personalisation, downloads that never run out and real delivery dates.

  4. Step 4

Share it on your own channels

Your social accounts, your website, your newsletter, markets and fairs. Etsy stays where new buyers find you; your shop is where your people come back to.

What comes across

  • The title and description
  • The price and how many you have
  • Up to ten photos, copied from Etsy
  • Up to two sets of options
  • Tags and materials

Up to 500 listings at a time. They arrive as drafts for you to check, or straight in the shop if you’d rather, and nothing changes on Etsy. Tick the printables as downloads, then add their files.

Bring from Etsy, after choosing the file: six listings ticked, the printable marked as a download, and a switch to put them straight in the shop

Bring from Etsy in the back office, with six listings ready to come in.

Two Etsy rules worth knowing

If you sell on Etsy too, Etsy’s rules still apply to your Etsy shop. Here’s what they say, in plain English. This is our summary of Etsy’s Seller Policy, not legal advice.

Don’t send Etsy buyers elsewhere to buy

Etsy doesn’t allow encouraging a buyer to finish a purchase off Etsy, including by sharing a web address, social handle or QR code in messages or listings for that purpose. So keep your own shop’s address out of Etsy messages, listings and Etsy order packaging, and share it through your own channels instead.

Don’t add Etsy buyers to your mailing list

Without a buyer’s consent, Etsy doesn’t let you add them to your email list or use their details for marketing. Invite people to sign up to your own newsletter themselves, from your posts, your website or a sign-up sheet at a fair.

Questions

Questions about Etsy

Can I keep selling on Etsy?
Yes. Your shop is separate from your Etsy shop and doesn’t change anything there. Run both for as long as you like.
Do I need an Etsy shop?
No. Your shop is complete on its own, and you never have to touch Etsy.
Will my Etsy reviews come across?
No, your Etsy reviews stay on Etsy. Your own shop asks buyers for a review after delivery, so it builds up reviews of its own.
Can I sell posted things and downloads, like on Etsy?
Yes, and one product can be both, with its own price for each. Downloads stay in each buyer’s library for good.
How do the fees compare?
It depends on what you sell and how much. The fee calculator works it out from your own numbers, using Etsy’s published fees.
Do I need a domain name?
No. Every shop has its own address from the start, like yourname.handsold.co.uk.
